Using helicopters, snowmobiles and tractors, rescuers opened roads and ferried supplies and feed to ranchers isolated by the blizzard.With grocery stores running out of supplies, National Guard soldiers worked diligently to take food to trapped residents.Residents also rushed to help their neighbors using farm tractors to clear roads.Power outages plagued the region especially in areas near Holly and Walsh.On Tuesday rescue efforts shifted from finding people to rescuing cattle.The Colorado Air National Guard and the Oklahoma Air National Guard flying in helicopters dropped hay to hungry cattle across the sparsely populated area.Helicopters crews operated out of the airports near Lamar, Springfield and Las Animas to reach animals.Airmen joined forces with area ranchers, who volunteered to help on the flights, to throw hay bales to stranded animals that were standing in 3-to-4-foot deep snow.Four Blackhawk helicopters, two Huey helicopters and a large Chinook helicopter assisted in the mission.National Guard crews also used a Kiowa scout helicopter to help direct disaster relief.State highways across the region began to flow with traffic again.On Wednesday, the sun peeked through with higher temperatures melting some of the snow.Hay drops continued with the help of a C-130 cargo plane out of Wyoming.The cargo plane with a crew of 10, took off from Pueblo Memorial Airport, dropping hay in spots across the valley.Rescue efforts continued throughout the day and power crews were getting assistance in fixing downed power lines.City crews in Lamar, Rocky Ford, La Junta and all towns in between continued to clear snow-packed streets.Workers from Pueblo and Colorado Springs also helped.National Guard units continued their humanitarian missions delivering medication to stranded residents, including oxygen and other needed items.Several buildings throughout the valley collapsed because of the weight of the heavy, melting snow.Outgoing Colorado Agriculture Director Don Ament said it was too early to determine how many cattle were lost.Thursday, the sun peeked through again, accompanied by warmer temperatures as the Wyoming Air National Guard continued to drop hay using a C-130 cargo plane.
